The hills have eyes….and large caliber explosive rounds.
World of Tanks, oh how you eat up much of the available spare time. Now despite the praise, there is some frustration with the game – mainly the hills. Oh lord, those hills will make you feel like an obese person trying to climb a green grassy hill on a bright sunny day: everyone will see you, and everyone will shoot you (more so in the game than in real life, though one can count “soft insults” as “taking fire”). This is of course a terrible situation, but such is the way of things when you are trying to drive a 10 – 50 tonne monster up these hills; gravity will play games with you and you will cry like a baby because of it. Never before has there been an experience in games where hills become nasty little strong points for the players on top of it, and a nightmare for players attempting to scale the bloody thing – Planetside 2 not withstanding.
Before the World of Tanks experience, people could just flood the hill with rockets and machine gun fire in order to flush out the enemy positions. However with World of Tanks, tank guns might not traverse as high, or the tank might be on an awkward angle, or the tank is blocked in by a friendly who refuses to back up and give some room to maneuver. Bypassing these hills would thus be a priority for any team wishing to get the drop on the enemy; yet even with the high ground available to a friendly teammate, they may have a hard time even hitting targets directly below them. Once again this difficulty can be attributed towards the limited turret traverse range, which can prove fatal if a tank destroyer has enough horse power to roll up the hill AND point its gun towards your side or rear armour.
Yet for all the difficulty the hills present, it makes the game play varied and entertaining. Indeed the mad fight to take the hill, or the mad rush to go around the hill so that you will not soak up the enemy rounds is quite the thrill to experience, and quite the sight to behold when you are sitting back in an M2 Medium overlooking the battlefield. Speaking of the M2 Medium, the “sit back and snipe” principle has its ups and downs. While it is normal for most, if not all, tanks to advance with caution, the M2 is particularly prone to this style of game play as the speed the tank can crank out is not as much as say a Chinese WZ-132 which spits out an incredible 520 horsepower with the default engine. That said though, there have been instances where advancing just behind the main column and then proceeding to overtake the column to set up a good firing position has proven to be a sound tactic. Some situations may arise that put the M2’s upgraded engine at an distinct advantage over a the slower tanks in the formation. From that vantage point the column will spot the enemy vehicles, and at that moment the gun sights will have narrowed in, and traversing the turret semi-slowly – if I may be allowed the phrase – will prove fatal for the enemy as the gun’s accuracy and penetration power will ruin the enemy’s day.
Play with the M2 Medium how you will dear readers, but know that going up against a heavy tank like the Soviet tier five KV-1 head-on is suicide, and should not be undertaken in any circumstance. Use speed and distance to your advantage, though you will still have to close with the enemy in order to destroy them – the 75mm is NOT a self-propelled gun by any definition.
